On another server I used to play there were 3 or 4 people that could reset the server. I take it that is not set up for LOTR?

We have multiple people that can reset the NWN server software... Problem right now is that the NWN server software is not running... Starting it would mean remote access to Turril's computer's operating system. Not sure if that is set up... But my guess is it's not, judging from the comment before yours  >:D

That's odd, cos it was offline on the server list (favourites page) for over 5 minutes, and when it was up again only 1 of the 3 or 4 ppl who were online before it crashed was online. The server did the same thing yesterday, actually. Crash, but not the kind where you end up in pocket.

That sounds more like the connection dropping, while the server keeps humming along nicely. Is your network cable solidly attached, Turril? ;)

Tono really did a number on the server this time.

Damm whats up the server man it was like one minute a dm was about to do some temple of doom thang next minute the server crashed and hasnt been back up since ..

Yes, Tono shot the new boss.  The new boss didnt like the way Tono disturbed his peaceful stroll and knocked him out.

As Tono fell back with a sudden and forceful drop, the shockwave from his fall tipped over the server.

But it didnt stop there.  The server tip-over created a fluke electomagnetic feedback into the server's ethernet connection.  As a result, it took out an entire node in the ISP service area.

Since the server is in a residential area, the local ISP is taking its time to address the problem.

Meanwhile, the local residents have decided that it's a nice day for a stroll .... then Tono appeared again ...

Still no 1.21 Gigawatts of electrical power to operate the flux capacitor.  :'(

Reset.

Server was having issues this morning.
Was alone on it and on log out it seemed to reboot itself.
I did a reset and now it seems ok, but upon reset it didn't count down the regular 3 minutes.

Having problems logging in.

It lists all the rooms. I get to attempting to log in then it just sits there. No error message or anything. I tried to connect to other servers but just the same thing.

I just changed broadband provider and it seem to be fine. I took off the firewall to see if that was blocking it but no affect.

I tried direct connect still nothing.

Not sure if its the game or my new broadband that is the problem.. anyone got a clue?

Sest made me want to play again, even if just to see how stuff is going... and he did this only a short time after the server went down.  So now I'm suffering as much as the rest of you and I don't even have anything I especially need or want to do.

sorry guys i didn't notice it down yesterday(daughters birthday and party so i never got on the pc). seems to be a hard drive issue with it atm. cant get it to boot up properly. hopefully i can extract and get it going on the secondary drive for the moment (have 3 drives on this machine just for this kinda issue) now i just have to remember to keep the mods updated on all 3 of em :/

This 24.57.n.n IP is just like the old IP with different numbers for n. That means it's the right IP, but for some reason it's not working. It's like you opened a local server. Try to connect yourself, if you can and nobody else can then the server must be local. If you can't then I have no idea.

If memory serves, there a website called No-Ip or something. That basically gives a name to your external IP address, so instead of 24.57.n.n, it will be something like gvm.servegame.com or w/e domain you choose. I remember that used to work when I hosted Quake 3 servers, but I have no idea if that works in NWN. Just an idea if everything else fails.

ok this is what i got so far. first my dam nwn cd seems to be corrupt so i cant reinstal it, but i have it still on lap top so tried with it. i could log into server both by LAN  and by direct connect. the LAN IP was the 192.168.1.109:5121
if i used direct connect ( from history) the IP i got when i connected was 127.0.0.1:5121

All seems too funky to be right, but until i can get some IT assistance all i got

Both of these IP's are unreachable for me  :(

The address 127.0.0.1 is your broadcast address.
The address 192.168.1.109 is your local address in your local network (network of your house, behind the net box).

The server address shall be 24.57.207.95.

Something is configured wrong on your server (linux or game) or your firewall (net box or computer).

 no luck last night. cant get my IT bud over before my vacation so in case any of you have an idea i will describe the problem. I thought it might be a hardware issue but the 2nd hard drive on the server goes online just fine. it has vista so i cant use it to run the server.
 the sever boots up just fine, but for whatever reason it doesnt detect the the net. if i try to diagnose the problem it tells me there is no internet, so somehow the settings got changed after i installed the fan, and after i fixed an invalid toon.
 any ideas would be appreciated so i can try to get it back up and running before i leave on vacation in 30 hours.

To help:
1/ Can you check the led (one yellow, one green) on each side of your network plug behind your compute, if they are off when you plug the nework cable and when the computer is on then it is a network board issue,
2/ In that case, can you check if the network board is correctly put in the mainboard slot, or correctly activated in the bios,
3/ by the way, check all the cable are correcty plug on the mainboard,
4/ otherwise it can be a network driver load issue on the computer boot, that will be hard to fix by mail, you have better to wait for your IT guy to fix it.

no luck fixing before vacation guys, sorry. very strange. internet works on server if i run vista, but not xp.  i will have to see about converting it to the secondary drive when i get back if i cant get it figured out. will keep u informed when i get back

there, let's see...

well, if you can connect to the internet using Vista on the same machine, then I guess the cable is connected properly and it's probably not a hardware issue. Could be a driver issue or maybe a security issue. Anything changed recently, before the crash? Like a software security update or some new software installed
I am assuming
- you had the vista dual boot option configured before the issue occured
- you can't browse the net using IE/chrome either (e.a. it's a general problem on the XP rig and not an issue specific to hosting nwn)

Some suggestions before you start:
1) make backups on external media (!!)
2) VERIFY you can read the external media ;)

In order to find the cause so we can properly deal with it try:
3) check if you can connect to the internet if you disable the firewall. If so, then check firewall settings
4) check if you can connect to the internet in safemode (F8 during startup, choose safe mode with network). If you can connect, then you know the network adapter is setup ok and some other software/program is causing the issue

5) You can check the windows event viewer (start > run > eventvwr) to view the logfile. This log is usually quite extensive and note that there may well be errors in here from looong before the issues ocurred. These probably are not the cause of the issue today. Also note that "normal operation events are logged here, not just errors and warnings. To help you find the relevant messages:
5a) Check the logs for event messages when you try to connect. Look them up on the internet, see if that gives you any clue what is causing the issue
5b) Check the various logs around the date the issues first occurred, see if you can find anything in the logs for software changes around this time.

Turril, hope you can get her up soon cause the timing of this downtime is really dreadfull: a lot of veterans were coming back or considering to come back....that was over a month ago now and I can imagine most players will have found a new game to get their daily kick (tochlight 2 anyone?)

AAAAAHHHHH!  I'm going nuts without my LOTR & NWN fix.  I hope the server is back up soon, if ever.  Other mods just are not the same for me.  I grew up on NWN with this mod and it was always a joy to come back after taking a break and seeing the veterans along with the new faces.

I am waiting and keep on waiting for the return of the server, the best I've seen.

   Huh, had a random feeling to log back in after a few years absent.  Bad timing on my part, but good to see so many old names around.  I spend most of my NWN time in the Ravenloft mod these days.  After all the arena/pvp focus servers died out, I found a new challenge in playing low magic serves and got pulled into the whole RP aspect in the process.  I never really saw myself as an RP kind of person, but it reminds me a lot of writing/reading in a way.    If anyone happens by there, I play under my old Antiworld name - "Legion XXI".  I've seen a few logins there that I recognized from here, so I'm not the only one you will run into.

   At any rate, good luck with your server issues, and when it comes back up maybe I'll dust off an old character and hold a player event for boss loot or something.  Happy hunting, and see you on the battlefield. (Noruas, that means you. Haha)

Being a system administrator for years, maybe I can be of some assistance ... message me at this forum or email me at mpasschier@gmail.com or use Skype of TS ... or any other ways of communication :)

Also dont know if this helps at all ... but I am able to run a (backup) server at home ... am running a linux server all day almost every day ... maybe it can run on that ... otherwise have here at home more than 5 computers running most of the time so I definately can find one computer to run GvM on, at any platform you wish (preferably XP, Windows7)
Also have enough harddiskspace for any database GvM has and can schedule backups for it .. can even sync the backups on schedule with any other computer you have?

Turril long ago I had asked this ones in a private email ... because I really am afraid this uber great server will die one day before my kids are old enough to play this game too ... but I will ask it again here ... if at all possible can I help with making and keeping backups in the form described above or can I help in any other way so that this server can live on forever?

Anyhow ... am missing this server a lot ... as do everone of us here I guess ...

think its a good thing to reboot server every 5 days or so, I think if server runs quite some time successively, it will cause "lock-ups"

Looks like the IP address changed so it won't appear in the favourites/recent list until you reconnect with the direct connect gvm.publicvm.com

Hello everyone, its been a while. This may not be the proper place to post, so sorry if it isn`t. Id like to get back on the server but am having some trouble. I can`t find the updates, and don't know what updates I need. I had to reinstall my game from scratch. I have no updates, so please be specific what I need, and where to find them, and what order they need to be done. Im not a computer wiz, by any means. Can anyone of you guys / gals help me out? It would be nice to get back and run around again, any help would be greatly appreciated thanks Doug / EL-Chupacabra

Real life and me being not a real active player anymore (still waiting for those travelthingies and dropchance improvements  :P) is getting a bit in the way lately.
But I'm on top of it now. although it doesnt look good a.t.m. harddrive looks damaged. Host is not starting. i'll keep you posted.

Story so far:
My host is up and running again (so I can use normal PC instead of mobile phone to post here  ;D)
Had to put new harddisk into it and reinstall all I needed
Right now (11:44 Dutch time) I copy all backup files from our GvM server onto host.
... will take probably 1 hour at least.

Then I need to copy last successful vault and database backup ... unfortunately last one successful was from Wednesday 1 October. .. so probably 1 day lost here  :'(
After that I need to configure all the needed security permissions for our server.
Shutdown host and then physically put harddisk and all wires back into PC
Start host and then ... run the server  :D

So I expect the server up and running in about 2 hours from now (11:52 Dutch time)

I'll keep you all posted

server is working same as always ... or so it seems ... only 1 difference is something I hear: it is making lots of extra noise (cooling fans raises and lowers speed quite often lately) ... dust was once an issue, but its clean inside now

Sometimes there is something called bad luck ... or at least pretty unfortunate circumstances.
Such a thing happened today ...

Our beloved (sponsored by many) processor has died ... fried or at least doesn't its job anymore ...
little bit of luck: I had a spare part same type PC ... so after swapping hard-drive and ethernet cards ... my internet and our GvM-server worked again.

Bad news though ... the processor which our server depends on, is again old/slow  :'(

I will try looking for better hardware ... but I'm afraid that I will not find it at my work anymore ... best old and obsolete PC's we have there are from 2007.
So until I find a decent one or a cheap second-hand PC ... We'll have to play our game with a slow processor ... which means we are about to face lagging for some time :crybaby2:

BTW ... it looks like lagging is not an issue with this "old PC", its almost as fast as the former one.

Yeh - it's been up over 24 hours now without a crash so hoping they are coincidense. The only thing that really changed from a players perspective last update was the new spawner in Osg Central Crypt - the rest of it was just general tidy of the palette.

Yeah, there must be connection issues. I can't log in at all. Does not even show the server as being live.

tried 20 more times and still nada. It's as if "gvm.publicvm.com" no longer exists.
Maybe when they cut Wikileaks' connection they killed GvM too hah

I just verified that the server is listed as down on the "gvm.publicvm.com" server status page.
I do not know what's going on but if you can log in fire, you may be the only one who can, besides maybe Grey.

The weird thing is myself, rabbac, Zoltar and Gronaldo have all been logged in since this weird connectivity issue.

While I wait for Grey I am going to do a in-game server restart but this is just a mod restart (restart done), I think the issue may lie deeper.

heh ... OK have analysed the problem ... Cosmic was right ... gvm.publicvm.com didnt exist anymore.

Problem probably lies in the fact that my computer main HD (C:) crashed many times (at least 8x or so and each time I had to rebuild all ... in the process forgotting the dynamic-dns client part of gvm.publicvm.com
The free dns-hoster probably thought it was'nt needed anymore.

Long story short:
Did remake dynamic dns name ... it now should all work again.

I killed the GvMserver processes manually ... (normal way wasnt working) ... and restarted all

server is up again.

But if you experience a "crash" again when invading Gondor ... then this is something we need to examine deeper.

I was only kidding i had died at the gates and was eating dirt for a few minutes then it seem to be still working but I couldnt respawn and when i logged back in it was down  :)

Been back a wee while and it hasn't been down yet so seems pretty stable. Thanks for keeping it running, it's good to be back in the groove.

On the plus side i can hand in all those damn quest items i've been hoarding in the hope of some travel passes!

Server strangely enough had stopped working ... its now up and running again!

hello. it seems that the new update on EE NWN has caused the GVM server to fail to work at the moment. does the server need updating or something?

I hope the update is the cure (done that and started server again) ... can someone confirm?

I was happily playing yesterday and it felt like a crash. When i look at gamespy (or whatever it's called) I can see and log into all the other servers but in my history it says server unknow and not up.

Also it's not on the server list.. maybe i need to reinstall steam or something.

I have the same problem and as of 5 minutes ago still down.

Server was running as normal .... but to be sure I did reboot the server again
(today standard reboot went automatically just like every mondaymorning)
I do see server in list and see everything is working fine .... R u 2 still having trouble??

I had a server crash last wednesday or so and also today.

Same crash with same toon. I do not believe in coincidences. There is something that is affecting server. Im going to remember what i was doing just before server crashed. If i am not wrong i was shifting and unshifting in the midle of the combat. Also i was changing weapons on toons. I can not say exactly, because between the server crah and the moment i do notice it, there is a lag of several seconds.

The toon is a level 33 or 34 Druid shifter monk.

I hope some administrator can read this and restat server sooner than next monday reset.

No its not ... only I had neglected to check forumsite for 4 days, sry about that .... hope to restore server in about 4 hours from now ... (lots to do right now)

Did started server again ... NWNEE had crashed somehow ...

Hope Druid-toon can not make server crash ...
Did saw NWNEE was in the middle of an update and halted somehow (maybe running server was stopping update) ... so think/hope it was just that
we will see.

Can't be Druid/shifter.  That's all I play now and it never happened to me.  If NWNEE had an update, that was it.

Without maintenance updates are time-bombs.

I have been playing with all my toons today and i played the shifter the last toon. I got only one shifter toon.

I was with the shifter and server crashed again. I was transitioning in helmet horror shape from pelennor fields to cave and then try to  rest inside cave under helmet horror shape. When i saw resting was unfinished i noticed server had crashed again.

I'm afraid of playing this build again.

Was gonna play but server is down. :(

Scary to read ... really hope toon isn't causing crashes ...

Server restarted btw ... indeed was crashed ... dunno what caused it yet ... didnt find the logs yet and am too lazy to put lots of effort in it right now ... maybe I dig deeper when crashes are happening more often

If you look at this post, you can see the people actually playing and affected by a server crash. 

How limited can 'DM rights' be to reset server?  Wouldn't be too bad to have someone as back up who'll check more often because they're playing more have the ability to reset server.

And the server crashed 3-4-5 times in last month?  But it was down for long enough to get the few players left to invest time in another server to feed the fix.  Which will draw them to potentially split time (like I did). 

@ClevarOne ... This is not really the right place to put this topic .... can you move it to another place maybe?

Back to downtime ... Host is somewhat under maintenance on Monday June 22
So server will be down sometimes  ... most likely between 15:00 and 19:00 GMT+2

I have been looking for info if it is posible to manage automatic restart in case of crashes and i found this one

If you have a remote server restart program, I'd love to have the ability to restart it, if, and only, when it's needed.

Also, that's the only responsibility I'm willing to have. I don't want DM/Deputy powers.

happened multiple days now, usually when i log off and then try to log on another toon.

So sorry ... went to kungfu summecamp this weekend ... no time to check forum.

Server will be down today for some more hors ... because I want to script a solution for whats happening a lot nowadays ...

A windows-error: an appcrash ... "neverwinternights has stopped working" is seen
That means my intended solution to restart server after 5 mins ... will never occur, because nwserver.exe is actually still running in the background ... and restart only happens if no nwserver.exe running is detected.

So now I have to try to write a cscript solution what checks errorstatus and if detected will close the window-error ... that will automatically means nwserver.exe will cease running.
Then my "restart server script" will trigger restart within 5 mins.

Oviously this needs to be tested and I can only test when this "error window" is happening ...

So expect a bit more downtime today.

Could not find a nice cscript online ... but I changed some policy rules,  I think appcrash.exe pop-ups will no longer occur now.
BUT !!!
ServerPC keeps reacting extreme slow ... did some SMART harddisk checks ... and it seems a harddisk crash is imminent ... so tomorrow again a long downtime while I copy harddisk onto new one.
In the meantime whole PC is shutdown .... expect no soon restart tomorrow
If all goes well ... server will be up late in the day.
Sorry all, for this long downtime ... but maintenance really is needed.

Thanks for the update. It was driving me nuts, wondering what was happening. Now that I know, take all the time you need to get it working the way you want it. I'll wait patiently. :)

Yes, most likely where those crashes a symptom of all those bad sectors I see now, while trying to clone the hard disk.

To be honest ... these stream of bad cluster and lost data warnings concerns me a lot.
Still I need to have patience before I know if the cloning is successful,  because the clone-process will take at least 16 hours more ...

So new update:
If all goes well ... server will be up tomorrow in the afternoon.
... fingers crossed all ... otherwise I need to install whole windows again and everything else
... and that will take at least a whole day I'm afraid.

Another update:
Worst case scenario just quite happened ... hard disk appears too damaged already to clone ... original disk itself still starts ... but reacts extremely slow after that ... also some window features ... like harddrive health check doesn't work anymore.
So I just bought (very cheap  - because I work as a school system administrator) windows 10.
I will use this on a new hard disk ... (until now server did run on windows7)
Then I try to install and run our GvM-server as soon as possible.
Am worried though that I will not make it today ... my best guess now: server will be up and running around the evening ... tomorrow! (European time).

Brand new Win10 install on old PC runs smoothly now and server is up and running again!
(And just in time too .. original hard disk almost didn't respond anymore ... and I could barely make the needed backups  - - normal backups hadn't run in 2 weeks I noticed ... so we were lucky)

Grey, posting here so you get notification: i think you again need to copy the override files into the correct directory after your reinstall.. shifter shapes are all messed up again as before.

PANIC  :o ...

Today the server's power supply was causing a total powerdown (fuses) in my house
So now I have a real challenge .... how to get a new PC and how fast can I make it up and running again ...
cause I need a power supply around 800W  ... and this costs at least 90 or 100 euro's
that's a lot of money for a small NWN-server

So my best chance to make a working server again without paying money ... is a spare financially written off PC from work ... (I have some so no problem there I guess ... unless there is no room for my video-card)
Then I need to install and configure the stuff again .... and after that we can play GvM again..

So my best guess server is online again is after this weekend ... around 7 / 8 September

Sorry all ... but I have no better news ... yet ....

Yeah it was even worse ... it was a 920W power supply.  :P
Did some reading about power supply's and game-pc's though and my only real big power consumer is the video-card ... (MSI GTX something).
Even then 600 or 700W should be more than enough for our current server.

But now an update here:
It was rather disappointing ... the PC's from work all have 430W power supply's (that's way too low) ... and not even 1 PCE-e 6+2-pins power cable ... (I need two for my video-card)

So I still have to buy one ... I found a Cooler Master MWE 650 ... around 60 euro ... and that's a price I don't mind to pay .. unfortunately delivery Tuesday or Wednesday ... and lots to do in RL
Please expect the worst .... server up and running around Friday 10th (maybe Thursday)

Power supply came 1 day too late ... so If I can manage to finish my daily job a bit earlier ... I can spend some time to install power supply AND video card ... (power supply came with 1 4x2 pins cable less - luckily had an old video card somewhere)

Aim is to have server up and running today.

Seems like that's what happened.

When it crashed, I went and checked to see if it was still up. I saw the server still there. I tried a couple times to re-enter with no success. I exited to windows and rebooted the game. That's when I saw it was offline. Came here and reported. Went back right after, refreshed the server list, and it was back. So I cancelled the notice and went back to playing.

Now, if we could just get the damned bosses to stop standing around and getting their butts kicked... It's not every boss. I notice it mostly with Luna and boss in city above Linhir. I believe it's linked to super buggy GS.

I dont know where to post this, but I lost some REALLY valuable items in the last crash.  Was building a new toon to level up with some players online, and moved gear from a toon Tauntnutz to a new toon Gauntnutz.  Pretty demoralizing.  anything I can do to rectify this?

Oh, and Bad_Karma was in the pocket when I pulled all the gear out of the chest.  He made a joke that he didn't know that the chest offered such good gear.  

Indeed I can vouch for quite some gear! I'd say: just give the guy what he claims he lost! (@CleverOne can you add me one of them nice shiny balrog blades?  >:D)

I saw a Clientside only! update for NWNEE .... but I expect a soon available stable update which will include serverside .... however ... server is now "as is" and runs quite stable now .... meaning: server will not update as soon as new patch is available ...
so maybe don't update NWNEE clientside too soon!

the server is unfortunately back down again. in answering your question, yes it has crashed a few times while i was playing...

Sadly we need to stay on topic here, so no place to discuss reasons of crashing
(and i'm not a developer so I cannot possibly investigate reasons of crashing)

So on topic:
a while ago I've made a script that checks each 5 mins or so, if nwnee-server is running ... if not then start.
And it works ... cause server was running when I checked.

My advise ... check 10 mins after crash if server is running again.

Hope crashes stay out or otherwise somebody finds out why these crashes are happening and when.
And post it somewhere in a new topic.

The server is showing as down again here (current time - East COast USA - Wednesday, March 15 12:35AM). i haven't been on since early Monday AM, so it may have been down for a long period of time. it seems the script is working some of the time since it appears to go back up by itself when i have previously reported it down...

Its running, not down ... maybe a glitch?
(Fun fact .... server checks every 5 mins if it is up ,.. if not ... server starts ... so unless Microsoft forces update ... server most of the times will be running again within 10 mins)

it's down again, not showing up in my favorites and when i try to direct connect (to 80.115.107.26:5121) it gives me this error:

"Attempting to find server. Direct connect and UDP hole punch failed. Requesting relay token. Relay access was denied. Relay said: Server is unknown to us. Connection to server has failed."

hmm i think there was a recent game update, maybe its throwing something off?

Hmmmm, huge update indeed + Steam update.
Hope everything keeps working in this mod with all the patches.
