I have built my 1st ranger ever as I was curious about the blade thirst spell which has been edited on GvM to add magic damage from level 10 onwards to a max 1d10 level 20. However, this does not seem to be working on swords that have some kind of elemental damage on them by default. Is that a bug?

If the element is "magical", then it wouldn't replace it unless the spell dmg is greater. All other types the spell would get added.
This spell would not work on a Starblade.  crybaby2

ah...was that intentional? Does deafening clang have the same limitation on sonic weaponry?

Yes, this is intentional.
The Sonic dmg from Deaf Clang should be the same, you'd still get the deafening property.  aragorn2
