Dragon Age: Origins - Toolset Confirmed
Hello maniack,
Thanks very much for subscribing to the World Builders newsletter. We have some pretty cool plans and news for you in the coming months, but thought you should hear the following news from us first, before it hits the public.

Introducing the Dragon Age Toolset
The Dragon Age Toolset provides builders with powerful, developer-grade tools.

Key features include:
Create Original Adventures: Using Dragon Age's rich set of assets and locations as starting blocks, you can modify these stunning areas by adding new quests, characters and scripting to create your own adventures, conversations and cut-scenes.
Powerful Script Editor: You can fully customize combat and creature AI to create detailed action sequences full of heart-pounding party-based tactical combat.

On-Going Toolset Content Updates: We have plans to release additional assets and features for the toolset in the future, allowing for expanded creation of new areas.

Live Toolset Demonstration at the Penny Arcade Expo
The Dragon Age Toolset will be part of a stage demonstration during the Penny Arcade Expo, August 29-31, 2008, at the Washington State Convention & Trade Center in Seattle, Washington.

At the time of this writing, you can attend the live demonstration scheduled to be on the PAX main stage Sunday, August 31, at 1:30 PM Pacific Time. For more PAX information and coverage please check out our Conferences 2008 web page.

Toolset Demonstration Highlights
At PAX, Dragon Age: Origins Producer Fernando Melo and Senior Designer Ferret Baudoin will be presenting a 45 minute overview of the toolset for Dragon Age fans.

The demonstration takes place in the Ruins of Ostagar area

A quick look at the extremely flexible Face Morphing feature

Clothing, armor and weapons will be selected giving a quick look at the variety

Enemy monsters will be selected and placed in the area

The new dialogue editor will be featured

The module created on stage will be played through live in the Dragon Age: Origins game

We hope to see you at PAX. Stay tuned for more toolset updates and information.

Baldurs Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Mass Effect, Jade Empire, Star Wars Kotor.... Bioware is, along with Blizzard and Bethesda, my favorite game "brands". I just hope EA doesnt destroy that.

Apparently Bioware is still free to make their own choices for now, they just have to put a big EA logo on every game they finish Smiley

Mass Effect.  ptooey.

Does it mean it sucks? I'm planning on buying it at the end of the year as a self-bought christmas gift (I'm playing Oblivion now and it is great, although I've managed to make a char almost impossible to kill just as I have made in Morrowind lol) .

As far as I know Mass effect is generally thought of as a great game.

Mass Effect is essentially Oblivion in space...with a bit more.  I have yet to play it, but I've seen gameplay with my friends playing and it seems great if you're into that style of game

Sorry, perhaps I should have said more.  I was straight onto the Mass Effect bandwagon as soon as it was available.

It is a good game, in and of itself.  However, it's DRM/copy-protection was so draconian at release (and is only slightly less so when I last checked) that I was annoyed on principle.  Worse than Bioshock.  I felt like I was guilty of piracy until proven innocent, or something like that.  I felt like I was renting the game, not that I had bought it.  I hate piracy.  I used to be in PC retail so I know what it does to the industry.  But there need to be other ways to fight it.  Overall, an even more upsetting and annoying experience than the poop that is the Steam platform.

Take a look at the reviews on Amazon.  I normally detest people commenting about things that aren't actually the game itself, e.g. pre-release incomplete demos, DRM, company politics, whatever.  But I found Mass Effect's implementation, courtesy of EA/Bioware, to be so offensive that I agree with many of the posters.  I returned Mass Effect.

The ends do not always justify the means.

I hope that game publishers someday realise that they are actually throwing gamers into the piracy network. I don't mind copy protection as long as it does not interfere with my software.

As far as I know every measure taken to protect a game has been cracked already. All it is usefull for is annoy players that have really paid for the game by introducing small "anomalies". A month ago Ubisoft even used a pirated fix to a DRM problem in an official patch, I thought it was Vegas 2, it was quite laughable when they wanted an official response.

Really, pirated versions are often much easier to install, which makes me very sad. Why just not drop the copy protection, it saves lots of money that has to be paid fo these protection programs, make the games somewhat cheaper that way and sell much more copies of it. I only see advantages Smiley

A Well, I think this opinion is to naive for the publishers....

Mostly I agree but I don't think CP should be 100% abandoned, or at least part of it.  CD-keys, indexes or other identifiers have uses.  Certain multiplayer setups should be tied to installs or purchases.  But other than that, no gamer copy protection has proved to be infallible.

The case for it is flawed anyway.  Look at the biggest selling titles of the last 5 or more years.  How many of them had draconian "protection" systems.  Some.  But not all.  So a low protection model can work.  Even though some business is lost, overall it helps encourage brand loyalty.  And repeat business over time is really what those houses are after, not just one-hit wonders.
