3.3 Restarts
Module restarts are manually done on a weekly basis.
Currently every Monday morning 7:00 AM (GMT +1) also depends on whether or not the server needs it (e.g. indications of glitches/lag disrupting game-play/functionality).

3.4 Map
A graphical map is available in the 'MAP' thread. -> LINK

3.5 Character test area
Leveling a character up to level 40 can take time, depending on game-play or the type of character. I have met many players online who have reached level 30 or more and didn't realise that their build was flawed.

With the amount of changes to classes, feats, spells and skills, it is often quite difficult to get an idea of how a character will work if it is tested outside of the GvM mod. So to help players with this, the mod now contains a test area where players can login test characters and level them to 40 to get an idea of how they fair.

To do this, create a character with the word '_test' (including the underscore) in the name - e.g. character_test_1 or fighter_shifter_test_1. This character will then get ported into the Test Area of the mod on login. From here you can level the character up, equip it with a basic gear set and then test it against a random bunch of NPCs.

To prevent cluttering your main accounts with test characters, it is worth creating a separate test account for your test characters. For example I use the account -firecracker-test- for mine.

7. Changes - Skills

7.1 Parry
For builds that have a combined 18+ levels of rogue or ranger, +1 AC is gained for every 7 (unmodified) skill points when duel wielding (including the use of double weapons and quarterstaves). A maximum of +6 AC can be gained from 42 skill points. The bonus is shield AC so will stack with deflection AC on weapons that have it.

By taking the Epic Skill Focus Parry feat, a further +1 AC will be gained.

7.2 Use Magic Device (UMD)
Boss items (e.g. red letter items) that have race, class or alignment restrictions are scripted to negate UMD and therefore can not be used by any character that does not meet the restrictions. Non boss items (e.g. all other items) can be UMD'd as normal.

8. Rules - Server

8.1 Naming your characters
Do not make characters with names taken from the Lord of the Rings. It's unoriginal and can cause confusion because some of the NPC's in GvM are LOTR characters.

If a DM or Deputy finds your name too offensive or vulgar, it will be changed.

8.2 Faction treason
It is ILLEGAL to raise a dead invader anywhere in your City or the Cair Andros Outpost area. Divine Protection is always in effect in these areas so players can respawn without penalty. The EXCEPTIONS are the Minas Morgul Bridge and the Minas Tirith Great Gate areas - raise your opponents there normally. If you have died while defending the Minas Morgul Bridge or Minas Tirith Great Gate areas, the invaders may not be able to get to you for a raise. Ask a faction member to raise you.

You may not attack NPCs from your own faction for any reason. You will experience heavy XP penalties for doing so.

You may not buff or heal an invading enemy (you should be killing them).

You may not open the gates for an invading enemy (but it is not illegal to leave gates open).

You may ally with the opposing faction in the wild (away from faction areas) to survive.
IMPORTANT: Be careful in these cases not to kill any NPCs allied with a member in your party as it will result in LARGE XP penalties.

8.3 DM and Deputy authority
DMs have full authority on the server, both when they are logged on as DM or as a player.

A Deputy's authority includes performing server resets when they are needed, moderating the shout or party channel, monitoring parked characters and conflict resolution. In the absence of a DM, a Deputy's judgements are final.

If you disagree with a DM or Deputy's decisions, do NOT take the issue to the shout or party channel. Use the DM channel or Tells to communicate with the DM or Deputy directly. If you have further issues, please send a personal message to another DM or -firecracker-, the GM / Player Advocate on the forum.

8.4 Miscellaneous rules
Loot stealing and kill stealing is not permitted.

Bug exploits, script exploits, character hacking, etc are not permitted.

Parking your character for more than 15 minutes is not permitted. This rule has temporarily been relaxed.

If a player appears to have no respect for these rules, it is NOT within your rights to break these rules in retaliation, no matter HOW bad things get. Making yourself a vigilante makes the DMs job that much harder to enforce the rules. Be cool, take screenshots, and let the DMs handle it.

Failure to follow these rules in their entirety may result in scolding, loss of XP / levels, deletion of characters, temporary banning or permanent banning.

Your staff wishes things to be fun and run smoothly. These rules exist to ensure this, but it is not our desire to make them overbearing or a burden. If you feel there is a legitimate reason for revising the rules, please mention it to the staff or PM -firecracker- directly.

When the Ring Quest is in play, The Ring Bearer and the Ring Bearer only is fair game to all levels. Mordor players do get a nice reward should they be the ones to stop the Ring Bearer.

9. Rules - PvP

9.1 PvP engagement
PvP is allowed and encouraged. All PvP rules apply to your familiar, summon or dominated NPC; they are your responsibility.

You may attack, without warning, any character of the opposite faction that is not of Effortless rank to you. Bear in mind that it IS possible for an Easy player to see you as Impossible.

You may NOT raise an enemy character that you stumble across and immediately attack them to score an easy PvP kill.

You may NOT attack anyone with an Effortless rank to you, unless they:
  • Attack you directly.
  • Pickpocket you (and you actually spot the attempt yourself).
  • Hang around to spy for their party and/or prevent you from resting. If you suspect this, you must tell that player to leave the area twice. If they do not leave, you may kill them and invoke the 10 minute evacuation rule.
  • Buff and/or heal a group of NPCs you are currently attacking.
  • Instantly close a gate on you that you just bashed open.

9.2 Party PvP
If an Effortless attacks another member of your traveling party, you are obligated to defend your comrades; BUT if you are traveling under Greater Sanctuary with your companions, that Effortless is still off-limits to you. Additionally, area-effect spells are not acceptable methods of initiating party PvP if there is a chance of injuring Effortless players.

Accidental infringements such as Attacks of Opportunity (AOO's) will happen. Make your apologies and move on.

The loser of a PvP CANNOT engage the winner, no matter where, for 10 minutes even if the winner is fighting your team-mates on another map.

The winner of a PvP can attack the loser again (if under 10 minute's) if the loser attacks a teammate in another area. It's a perk of being a WINNER of a PvP.

Once the battle is over, all legal statuses from effortless players are removed. Once the 10 minute wait period is over, you may not attack the same effortless player unless he gives you a legal reason to attack.

9.3 PvP execution
ALL tactics are legal (HIPS, GS, IGMS, Bigbys, etc) If you plan on using the Flesh to Stone spell, be prepared to ALSO use the Stone to Flesh spell if you can't actually finish the kill (yes it is possible).

If you disarm your opponent's weapon, it must be returned to him after the fight.

You may NOT log out in the middle of a PvP fight for any reason. If you crash, log back in, explain, and resume fighting.

You MAY flee for your life! However, fleeing to Eru's Lounge through the portal in your City is not allowed.

9.4 PvP aftermath
After a PvP kill, you MUST raise your fallen opponent (do not rest or buff before raising). You may wait a short time if you have to defend yourself from other players or attacking NPCs. There are TWO exceptions to this rule:
  • If you catch someone pickpocketing you, you may kill them (regardless of level) and let them lay there in misery.
  • If the killed player, after being raised, immediately attacks you again; if this happens repeatedly, let them lay there in misery.

It is YOUR responsibility to carry a stock of Raise Dead scrolls/chains or alternate raising method.

After a PvP kill, you must wait 10 minutes (real time) before you can re-initiate combat with the same player(s), unless the player(s) involved agree to an earlier re-match. Repeatedly killing the same player over and over again (even when following the 10 minute rule) is considered griefing and poor sport, and is discouraged.

After a PvP kill, you MUST leave the immediate zone for 10 minutes (real time) before you can re-enter, UNLESS your killer says you can stay. Special notes on this rule:
  • If killed in Pelennor Fields or Morgul Crossroads you must spend your 10 minutes OUTSIDE the gates and in the next zone. The winner of the fight (or an aid) must escort you out of the gates as soon as possible, allowing for any currently raging battles to finish.
  • If killed in a City area you must respawn (your invasion is over). Cities are under permanent Divine Protection.
  • If killed by an NPC in any City area only a teammate can raise, you or you can respawn.
  • If killed in a Group PvP, you CANNOT rejoin in the battle until one side is victorious, unless agreed upon. You cannot immediately attack the victors until the last of your group's 10 minutes are up, unless your in a different area from the battle.
  • The loser of a PvP fight is off limits to all for 10 minutes. The loser cannot enter or initiate any PvP fight until their 10 minutes has expired.

Any re-logging of a different character to claim vengeance (unless previously agreed-upon) is a violation and will result in severe punishment.

If you're engaged in a PvP battle and an NPC gets the final shot, you must still raise your opponent (except in the cities). The PvP 10 minute rules will still apply, no instant killing to get the XP.

After any battle, Effortless players are no longer legal and may not be attacked, until they give you a legal reason to attack them.

The loser of a PvP CANNOT engage the winner, no matter where, for 10 minutes even if the winner is fighting your team-mates on another map.

9.5 PvP & summons
Any summons under your command are part of you & your responsibility.

Any summons can not be used to initiate a fight with an Effortless or Impossible player.

If attacked by a summons from an Effortless player, you MUST FIRST ask them to call the summons off. If they fail to do so you may kill the summons ONLY.

You may not kill any Effortless player's summons for the fun of it, unless it attacked you and you asked them to call it off.

If your summons accidentally kills an Effortless player, you must resurrect the player & apologise.

If your summons kills your opponents in PvP, you will not get the PvP experience. You must resurrect your opponent and MAY NOT kill them again to get the experience - the PvP 10 minute rules still apply.

9.6 Pickpocketing
Pickpocketing is allowed, and is considered a hostile action.

You MAY attempt to pickpocket:
  • Any hostile NPC.
  • Any faction-neutral NPCs who are not initially hostile to you.
  • Any hostile PC if they are also legal PvP targets (not Effortless rank).

You MAY NOT attempt to pickpocket:
  • Any same-faction or friendly character, PC or NPC.

If you get caught pickpocketing, the victim, along with his traveling party, can retaliate with full force in an effort to regain the stolen item(s), regardless of levels. If the pickpocket-er is in a traveling party of his own, that party may not defend him if he gets caught.

9.7 Breaking PvP rules
Mistakes can happen and each situation will take this into account.

If you have an issue with others breaking PvP rules - take a screenshot of the infraction. Take a screenshot of the combat log showing them logout, the conversation with the person who didn't wait 10 minutes, the effortless killing etc etc.

Examples of breaking rules could be:
  • Removal of the character for 2 weeks
  • Removal of the character permanently
  • Removal of all characters
  • A temporary or permanent ban

If your a veteran or a new player - the PvP rules are listed here and in your Journals. Any questions feel free to ask the staff.

10. Rules - Forum

10.1 What the forum is for
Anything that has to do with GvM - ideas, builds, help, events or bugs etc.

10.2 What the forum is not for
This is not the place to complain about other players. If you have an issue with another player, the rest of us don't want to hear about it.

If you want to complain about a player then PM and DM or Deputy. If you want to complain about a DM or Deputy then PM one of the lead DMs. Screenshots of any incidents will greatly help.

Disrespecting, name calling other players will not be tolerated here.

Failure to meet these rules will result in a permanent silence.

11. Rules - Language

11.1 Simple statement
English is the official language of the GvM mod and forum. Many languages are spoken here; please let us know if you are having trouble reading any rules or understanding something as there may be someone who can translate for you.

11.2 Keep it clean
Keep the language in both the in-game chat channels and forum threads clean - this includes private messages. The occasional slip up is more than understandable but directed foul, mean spirited, offensive, obscene language is not welcome and will not be tolerated, and neither will racial or religious slurs. Punishments will be given to offenders.

11.3 Spamming
Please refrain from spamming the in-game shout and party chat channels, and forum threads. Punishments will be given to repeating offenders.

12. Rules - Bug/Glitch Abusing

12.1 Simple statement
Any form of bug/glitch abusing will not be tolerated. This includes anything from item duplicating to using bugged shifter items to gate ghosting etc etc - everything is logged so we can easily check.

Punishment will vary depending on the severity and frequency and will range from a first time warning to a ban, a gear wipe to an account wipe etc etc.

If you discover a bug report it to one of the staff in-game or via a forum direct message.

13. FAQs

13.1 Module FAQs

13.1.1 How do I get started?
Firstly read all of the information in this thread.

Once you have read it, create your first character and log in. You will start in the Wizard's Pocket, which is where you will start after each reset. There is a set of double doors nearby which will take you to Eru's Lounge. In both rooms you will find various information flags and signs. Make sure to read all the information before you start playing.

Once you have read all that information, in the Lounge you will find Eru's Receptionist and two recruiters - one for Gondor and one for Mordor. Speak to the Receptionist and then determine which side you would like to play and then speak to that recruiter to sign up. That will determine your character's faction from that point onward. Once you have chosen a faction, you will be able to go through the portal located in front of the recruiters and you will be taken to the starting point for the faction you have chosen (Minas Morgul for Mordor faction and Minas Tirith for Gondor faction).

One important point that you should consider is that the two factions have alignment restrictions. If you wish to join the Gondor faction, you must be good or neutral. If you wish to join the Mordor faction, you must be evil or neutral. If you have already created a character for the first time and chosen to be good or evil, you will not have a choice about which faction that character can join.

Once at the starting point for your faction, do a Shout and ask to be invited into the party for your faction. If you are playing for Mordor, you would typically announce or "MIP" (Mordor Invite Please) or "GIP" (Gondor Invite Please) if you are playing for Gondor. You should get an invitation and press the Accept button to join the party. Understand that you will WANT to join your faction's party. Not only will you get experience points from quests being turned in, but your faction mates will often rush to your aid to defend or raise you.

Note that the faction is not tied to you as a user but rather the character you are playing. You determine the faction for each of your characters. Many players play characters for both Gondor and Mordor.

13.1.2 Is PvP (Player vs Player) allowed on this server?
Yes. In fact, the module is geared towards PvP with good experience points being granted for PvP kills (based on the difference in levels of the combatants). Don't be upset if you are killed frequently when you first start. This is part of the game and you will learn how to defend yourself. We all went through the same thing when we first started. Whining about being killed via the shout channel is considered bad form and should be avoided.

Note that if you play both Gondor and Mordor characters, you should not log in characters from one faction in order to spy on the other faction and take advantage of that knowledge. Doing so will earn you a great deal of wrath from other players including those on the side you are playing for.

Make sure to read the rules for PvP before getting into PvP combat

For ready access, these rules have also been included in your character's journal.

13.1.3 How can I tell what is new on the server?
Updates to the mod are announced in the 'MODULE STATUS' thread. -> LINK

The thread will have sub links to associated threads detailing general changes, additions, bug fixes etc etc.

13.1.4 How do I ask questions?
If you have questions after you have started playing, first start by asking your faction party. Most players are very helpful and will answer your question or tell you that that do not know. Using the shout channel is generally discouraged so only use it as a last resort. If you are still having a problem after checking with your faction party, use the DM channel to ask for assistance. You can also post questions on the forum.

13.2 Character FAQs

13.2.1 I'm new to building NWN characters... where do I start?
If you are new to Neverwinter Nights, the best place to start is probably the single player game's tutorial. NWN has literally thousands of different build combinations, so there is practically no limit to your own experimentation. For power gamers or those just looking for explanations of all those feats or spells, check out the NWN Wiki or the downloadable 3rd party manual, Neverwinter Grimoire.

If you are new to the GvM mod, there are a number of modifications to classes, spells and feats. Be sure to read through the changes listed in this thread before starting your builds.

There is a section dedicated to build ideas on this forum where players have submitted their ideas for characters.

13.2.2 Can I further customise my characters?
Yes. In Eru's Lounge there are a bunch of tailors that allow you to customise your character's appearance and equipment.

13.2.3 Can I re-level my character?
There is no in-game mechanism to fully re-level your characters. The general rule of thumb is that while DMs have the power to re-level characters, they will not, especially if constantly asked.

There is the ability to re-do the last level on a character by talking to the Divine Intervention NPC in Eru's Lounge - RDDs may have issues using this as it can often invalidate the character, so be warned. There is also an NPC in Eru's Lounge that will remove levels from your character, but not restore them.

13.2.4 Can I rename my character?
No, but a DM might if asked extremely nicely.

13.2.5 Can I change my character's alignment?
No.

13.2.6 Can I change my character's faction?
No, once a character has been recruited to a faction, it is locked to that faction.

13.2.7 Can I delete characters I no longer use?
There is no in-game mechanism to delete characters. Send a PM to -firecracker- and include your exact account name and a list of the exact character names you wish to have deleted. Please remember to remove any inventory or GP that you wish to keep.

Before requesting the deletion, you can use the XP banker, found in the Banking Area to bank a proportion of the character's XP. This XP is stored in your XP bank which you can then use on your new characters.

13.2.8 How do I transfer gear or gold to different characters?
One method of storing or transferring equipment is to create a storage character called a "mule". If you include the text "mule" (case insensitive) in the character name, you will be given free levels but will not be able to enter the portal to Middle Earth. Players often create meaningful names for their mules such as "Cloak Mule #1". This will help you organize your equipment as you accumulate more goodies.

The most common method of using mules is to find a secluded spot in the pocket or lounge and drop what you want to transfer onto the floor. Log out and log your mule back in and pick up the goods you just dropped on the floor. Be sure NOT to do this anywhere in the realm itself. The clean up script, which runs every five minutes, may erase your goods before you get a chance to collect them.

13.2.9 Can I use bags of carrying?
Yes but if bags of carrying are over used in inventories, they can cause lag issues. Please limit your characters to 2 bags.

13.3 Problem related FAQs

13.3.1 What do I do if I have a problem with another player?
If you feel there has been a rule infraction, immediately take a screen shot (see below) to have in case it is needed. Then use tells to communicate with the player to determine why the player did so. Perhaps it was a misperception, automatic attack, or they just plain screwed up. If you need a raise, make sure to ask for it. Try to resolve your differences in a calm and mature manner rather than assuming the worst and attacking them verbally. Also, do your best not to use the shout channel to complain. This may be difficult if you are dead, but sometimes these types of episodes drag on with players shouting back and forth and ruining everyone-else's game-play.

If you feel the rule violation was blatant or the player doesn't seem to care, then attempt to contact a Deputy who may be online by asking for one via the shout channel. Just ask once and if there is no response use the DM channel to request assistance. Please do not use the should channel asking for help from a DM or spam the DM channel. If they are on, they will respond. If no DM is logged in, go to the forum and find a DM or deputy listed in the list of DMs and deputies and send one of them a Private Messenger (PM) via the forum. Include all information related to the event. That DM or deputy should respond to your concern.

13.4 General FAQs

13.4.1 Are there any events?
DMs sometimes hold impromptu events. Sometimes we schedule them.

13.4.2 I'm past third level and I don't seem to be able to use Raise Dead scrolls. Why?
If you are a mage and have chosen Spell Focus - Abjuration as a feat, you will not be able to cast or use scrolls that belong to the Conjuration school of magic. This includes Raise Dead. Note that you MUST be able to raise any opponents you kill in PvP, so a way has been provided for you to raise them. In your faction base, there is a merchant who sells a Resurrection Chain that allows you to cast Raise Dead. Make sure to buy enough for all the PvP battles you will fight!

13.4.3 How do I find out about specific magic items?
There is no centralized list of magic items in GvM. Although there are merchants scattered throughout, including some rather special ones, there are a tremendous number of items to be found by getting drops from killed monsters. It is part of the fun to locate these. If you are looking for an item that does a specific function, ask your faction party if they know of any such item and you will likely get an answer.

13.4.4 Can I multibox? (play on multiple computers from the same internet connection)
YES! But you will need to modify the Client Port number of each NWN instance or you may experience issues when logged in. This can be done by following these steps. -> LINK

14. Events

14.1 Event information
DMs sometimes hold impromptu events. Sometimes we schedule them. When schedules an announcement will be made in the Admin Announcements section of the forum.

The event type will range from PvP, PvE, Capture the flag (CTF) and Arena.

The main prizes are XP, Travel Tickets and items.

There is website dedicated to events with past and upcoming event information. -> LINK

There are level cut offs for events which are STANDARD GvM cutoff levels. So, if you are big into events, make some PvP toons for these levels:
0 - 19
20 - 26
27 - 32
33 - 40

All events will be in one of these 4 categories. If you have any questions, please make a new topic or PM your questions to Nobutadas.

15. Other Useful Information

15.1 Taking a screen shot
Press the Print Screen key, which is often labeled "Print Screen" or "PrtScn" (or something similar). A graphic image of what was being displayed in NWN will be created in your \NeverwinterNights\NWN\screenshots directory. The files will have a file extension (ending) of .tga by default. Look at the date/time of the files (if you did more than one) to determine which files are which screen shots.

15.2 Reducing the 'Could not connect to master server...' timeout when logging into multiplayer
This started occurring when the Bioware NWN Master server(s) got turned off. This fix works for Windows XP - 8.

Firstly, if you are really unsure of what you are doing, take a copy/backup of the file (mentioned below).

Go to the directory : C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc
Using Notepad edit the following file : hosts
Add this line at the bottom : 0.0.0.0 nwmaster.bioware.com
Go File -> Save, then close Notepad.

What this does is invalidates the connection from your computer to the Master server(s), so when you connect to multiplayer now the 'Could not connect to master server...' message should come up instantly instead of waiting for it to timeout.

If you are on Windows Vista, 7 or 8 you may have permission problems trying to edit this file, follow these instructions to get around this. -> LINK

15.3 Reducing the 'Connection failed, try another Nick' timeout when logging into multiplayer
This started occurring when the Gamespy server(s) got turned off. This fix works for Windows XP - 8.

Firstly, if you are really unsure of what you are doing, take a copy/backup of the file (mentioned below).

Go to the directory : C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc
Using Notepad edit the following file : hosts
Add this line at the bottom : 0.0.0.0 peerchat.gamespy.com
Go File -> Save, then close Notepad.

What this does is invalidates the connection from your computer to the Gamespy server(s), so when you connect to multiplayer now the 'Connection failed, try another Nick' message should come up instantly instead of waiting for it to timeout.

If you are on Windows Vista, 7 or 8 you may have permission problems trying to edit this file, follow these instructions to get around this. -> LINK

17. XP Bonus

17.1 General
The concept of an XP bonus runs on the module. When the module is started the XP bonus for each faction starts out at 30%. This means an additional 30% XP bonus is given on top of the standard XP reward for an NPC kill.

This bonus can be increased per faction by holding certain areas and by killing certain bosses. Kills from summons or familiers do not receive the bonus, so just the standard XP reward is received.

The value of each faction's XP bonus can be seen from the XP Information Sign in the Mad Wizard's Pocket area or by using your faction's Seal in your inventory.

17.2 Osgiliath & Cair Andros Outpost
Both of these areas start off as neutral when the module is started. By taking control of each area (by killing the opposing faction's boss in those areas), will switch control of that area to your faction, which grants a 10% XP bonus. So for example Mordor holding both Osgiliath and the Outpost will grant a 20% XP bonus to all Mordor PCs. Gondor can then take either or both areas which will remove the bonus from Mordor PCs and give it to Gondor PCs.

17.3 Bosses
Certain bosses contribute to each faction's XP bonus when they are killed. This bonus is accumulative which means they can be killed multiple times for multiple rewards. The following bosses contribute to the XP bonus:

Gondor
Aragorn : 10%
Elrond : 10%
Faramir : 5%
Radagast the Brown: 5%
King of Pelargir : 5%
Éomer : 5%
Galadriel : 5%
Imrahil : 5%

Mordor
Witch King of Mordor : 10%
Azrwyn : 10%
Wraith Guard : 5%
Ungoliant : 5%
Corrupted Orc Thrall : 5%
Captain of the Corsairs : 5%
Sistra : 5%
Gothmog : 5%

Hostile (can be killed by either faction)
Saruman of Many Colors : 10%
Balrog of Moria : 10%
Scorpia the Hive Queen : 10%
Ghost of Smaug : 10%
High Priest of Doom : 10%
Baragor : 5%
Bilgash the Dark : 5%
Squint-eyed Southerner : 5%
Temple of Doom Guardian : 5%
Slaver Commander : 5%
