I'm building a barbarian hitter but don't want to go all the way to level 40 to find out the concept is no good.  Choice is I max taunt and intimidate, and take terrifying rage, epic taunt and epic intimidate OR ignore terrifying rage and the epic skills (take an energy resistance and add 2 STR).

1) Will terrifying rage do anything against the boss underlings?  Says DC is Intimidate (55ish) -3d8.  Is that 55 plus 1d10, minus 3d8 against an opposed save vs mind spell (Will?)
2) Will a taunt (63 plus 1d20) have any chance of working on a boss (Witch King, Aragon, etc.  A real one..)  I've seen reflex saves in the 70s from mid-level bosses.

Am I wasting my time?  Is my math even right?

Sorry; I'll get it right next time.

Anyone ever tried to taunt one of the big bosses?  What Taunt do you need?

Looks like nobody (those who are still around) knows anything about taunting bosses ... or hasn't read this topic yet
My guess though ... its not gonna work or at least less than expected ... cause bosses are kind of "cheating buggers" in most cases (at least that's my opinion)
Still it could/should work in most other situations ... so maybe fun to build anyway?
Afterwards you could tell us here if this works enough and how effective it can be?
Hope to read that one one day ...

Well, I built him to 40th.  I'd post the build so both of us can read it later Tongue, but might as well shorthand it here.  Barbarian Fighter Weapon Master - no tumble or UMD.  But, scythe with AB 66 with Bless/Aid/Rages, and 13 fighter levels to get a 28% chance of the Fighter Widget to trigger.

Regarding Taunt:

Toon has Intimidate and Taunt of 50 with no buffs or items.
Greater Rage OR Mighty Rage increase Taunt by 10; together they stack.

Full Mighty/Greater Rage Taunt is 70 (plus 1d20) for a taunt of between 71 and 90.
Half-Spider Scrappers DC is 32
Corrupted Orc Thrall DC is 54
Shagrat DC is 80
Osgiliath Revenant Boss DC 65
(Giants are DC between 10 and 18).

If you have a Mordor tank that can get me close enough, I'd love to try and taunt some of the Gondor bosses and see how they stack up.

Hey!

Sorry I'm not around much these days but do pop in now and again so thought I'd chip in on this one, as I did have a couple of taunt specialist builds. One I actually posted the build for and is here:
http://www.gondorvsmordor.com/gvm2/forum/index.php?topic=1023.0

There is some info in the build thread but to cut a story short, this was a bard shifter that focused in the helmed horror shape and the taunt skill. It could get a taunt of over 100 which would pretty much taunt anything with a fairly descent level of success (not guaranteed success though).

Intimidate is a bit different. Again I did do a build that actually specialised in both taunt and intimidate and was some kind of very high level barbarian build (32 levels I think with fighter/rogue classes too). I can probably dig the build out from my archive if I look if it would be of any use. So if I remember right, with the right gear on this goon could get a taunt and intimidate score of both over 100. The problem I found was that while it could taunt nearly everything with a good level of success, the intimidate and terrifying rage didn't do so well again very high level bosses as I think the checks are quite different unlike taunt which is vs the opponents concentration skill which can only get so high.

So in short for bosses taunt is very effective but you do need to get taunt as high as possible and over 100 to be able to taunt bosses like Aragorn. Intimidate - great for lower level stuff or maybe mobs that defend bosses, but for bosses themselves I found it quite hit and miss.
